Foot And Ankle Surgery

The foot and ankle are a complex structure providing stability to the body and performing complex movements and rotations. Sadly, our feet and ankles can develop many different pain-inducing issues and deformities which can have a debilitating impact on our mobility and quality of life.

Thankfully podiatric surgery is an effective way to deal with many of these problems and often conservative, non-surgical treatments can effectively manage foot pain.

Solutions such as orthotics, pain relieving injections and shockwave treatment plus sensible footwear changes and following sound footcare advice can make the world of difference and avoid surgical intervention.

However, where pain persists and conservative treatments have not solved the issue then surgery may be the logical next step to treat pain.

Please note: although surgery may provide a solution to many long-term problems it is important to note that not all conditions are solved following surgical intervention.

Surgery should be primarily carried out for the relief of persistent pain or deformity. Improving the cosmetic look of the foot alone is not a good reason for an invasive foot surgery procedure.

  • There are many different surgical solutions available to treat foot pain and deformity and the right treatment plan for you will depend on the symptoms and condition you present with.

The most common operations treat the following conditions:

    • Bunions

    • Hammer and clawed toes

    • Joint pain and arthritis

    • Fusions and joint replacements

    • Repair of tendons and ligaments

    • Neuroma

    • Ganglions

The good news is foot surgery can usually be performed under general anaesthetic, sedation or local anaesthetic, typically as a day case procedure.

  • As with any medical procedure, there are risks which David will always thoroughly explain to you prior to your treatment, so you can be informed every step of the way.

The main risks following foot and ankle surgery are:

    Pain

    Swelling

    Infection

    Tender scarring

    Deep vein thrombosis

    Chronic pain syndrome (CRPS)

    Numbness

    Joint stiffness
